Mike's Big 20! When I took early retirement from my career as a financial advisor or as “The Man from The Pru” as the catchphrase was at the time, I was looking for an opportunity where I was still involved in helping people. I was offered a chance to work as a volunteer ambulance driver for St Luke’s Hospice which I took and found rewarding. During this time I was asked by a day-care patient if I knew of another organisation “Plymouth Shopmobility and Community Transport” as we were formerly known. They were looking for volunteer drivers to support the community in getting out and about where they might otherwise find difficulty. I made the effort to get in touch and after being given a job description I decided to come on board. Well, that was 20 years ago and I am still only a youngster! I wish! For me it is not like going to work as I enjoy the company of our clients and helping them get from A to B and with any other assistance they may need. I never really thought of retiring and see the job now as a way of life. I would also like to pay tribute to Lesley our Manager and all our lovely staff and volunteers who show great dedication to Access Plymouth and our clients. If I have a favourite moment (and there are many) it would be the great and unexpected moment when I was presented with a certificate and gifts, one of which I am wearing in the photo in recognition of my service. Thank you to everyone for making the past 20 years such an enjoyable experience and I hope that it isn’t too long before we see you all again. Meanwhile, take care and Stay Safe! Mike Jennings, Community Car Volunteer.
